Springbok hopeful heads overseas

During the first half of last year, Sanele Nohamba established as one of the most in-form players in South African rugby, having excelled for the Lions after making a transition from scrumhalf to flyhalf.
Despite his diminutive stature, Nohamba dazzled with his pace, sidestep, flair and goal-kicking ability, which led to widespread calls among the Springbok fanbase for him to receive a national call-up.
At one point, Rassie Erasmus admitted that the utility back was very much on the radar, but ultimately Nohamba didn’t crack the nod during the 2024 Test season.
With the scrumhalf position well covered and Nohamba perhaps not physical or experienced enough to be viewed as a Test flyhalf, he was still rather unfortunate to miss out on a Springbok cap despite being in the form of his life.
In recent months that form has begun to waver, and Nohamba has quite regularly needed to make do with a place on the Lions bench.
With all this in mind, it has now been confirmed that the 26-year-old has been granted an early release from his current contract, and will continue his club career in Japan.
“I would just like to thank the Lions for having given me the opportunity to play my rugby here. It’s been a memorable two years and an even bigger honour serving the franchise.
“To the fans, coaches and my fellow brothers at the Lions – a massive thank you. I wish you nothing but success for many years to come.”
DO YOU THINK NOHAMBA SHOULD HAVE BEEN BACKED TO PLAY FOR THE SPRINGBOKS LAST YEAR?
