Gatland turns to Plumtree for answers

Loose forward Taine Plumtree has been called up by Wales boss Warren Gatland for the injured Aaron Wainwright in the buildup to Saturday’s Six Nations clash against Italy.
No 8 Wainwright suffered a facial injury in a record 43-0 defeat to France in Paris last week, a disastrous start to the Welsh’s championship campaign.
Centre Owen Watkins is also undergoing assessment for a knee issue from the same match.

"Scarlets back row Taine Plumtree has been called up to the Wales senior men's squad while Aaron Wainwright continues his recovery from a facial injury sustained during Friday night's opening match of the 2025 Six Nations against France," reads a Welsh Rugby Union statement.
"Ospreys centre Owen Watkin continues to undergo assessment on a knee injury also sustained during Friday's match. Tighthead prop WillGriff John [Sale Sharks] has re-joined the squad in Nice."
Wales' 13th consecutive defeat has left Gatland under huge pressure and the Azzurri, fresh off a strong performance against Scotland, will sense an opportunity in Rome this week.
