One of New Zealand rugby's most dynamic and experienced players has been handed the captaincy of Super Rugby side Moana Pasifika this season.

Former World Player of the Year, Ardie Savea will lead Pasifika in his maiden season with the franchise as they push for a breakthrough campaign in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific.

"It's a huge honour to come here and lead with my actions first, then help the boys reach a level we can be proud of," Savea said.

"We have the flair and X factor. It's about combining that with smart game awareness and control."

The 94-Test All Black loose forward's arrival from the Hurricanes last year made him an obvious choice, but head coach Tana Umaga ensured it was a team decision.

"To be honest, it was unanimous," Umaga said. "His reputation precedes him, but when you see the man behind the myth, he's just like us.

"He leads with actions and has a wealth of knowledge. He's captained high-level teams, so it was natural."

Pasifika finished last in their first two seasons before moving up to 11th in 2024, winning four matches – more than their first two seasons combined. Savea's presence, alongside his older brother Julian, is expected to elevate the squad.

"There's a lot of talk about me coming in and boys following, but I've got to be better too," he said. "I'm only as good as the first game. I've got to be on my toes."

Pasifika will kick off their campaign against the Force in Perth on 15 February, before facing the Reds in Brisbane. Their first home game is against the Highlanders on 28 February, followed by a highly anticipated clash against Savea's former team on 8 March.
