The Telegraph reports that Sir Bill Beaumont could make a dramatic return to the Rugby Football Union (RFU) as a potential interim chairman.

This comes amid growing speculation that Tom Ilube, the embattled current chair, may step down following the explosive salary and bonus scandal rocking the organisation.

Ilube and Sweeney in the Hot Seat
Ilube, alongside RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney, is already facing motions for dismissal. A special general meeting (SGM) has been called after a grass-roots revolt. The duo met with RFU president Rob Udwin on Thursday after an emergency council meeting on Wednesday night at Twickenham, aiming to "agree a way forward." Udwin acknowledged the need for "visible and proactive leadership," but the situation remains tense.

Beaumont: The Comeback King?
Beaumont, who previously chaired the RFU from 2012 to 2016, is according to The Telegraph ready to step in if Ilube steps aside. The World Rugby chairman could bring stability during this turbulent period, but his potential return highlights the gravity of the current crisis.

Financial Fallout Fuels Tensions
Hopes for a resolution at Wednesday's meeting were quickly dashed. Tensions escalated following detailed presentations on RFU finances and the controversial long-term incentive plan (LTIP) bonuses. Former RFU chair Andy Cosslett provided context on the £1.3 million payouts, which were implemented during Covid, but sources claim the lengthy discussions only worsened the atmosphere.

It's clear the RFU is facing one of its most challenging leadership crises in recent history. Will Beaumont answer the call, or is this the start of an even greater upheaval?
