An obstacle has been added to the Sharks and Lions’ URC gauntlet after Ospreys recruited powerful Fiji captain Waisea Nayacalevu.
The 1.93m, 105kg centre has joined Ospreys until the end of the season as injury cover for injured centre Owen Watkin, who suffered a severe knee injury during Wales’ Six Nations opener against France in Paris last month.
Nayacalevu led Fiji at the 2023 World Cup in France and has scored 14 tries in 35 Test appearances for his country.
“It is not often a player of Waisea’s calibre becomes available in-season,” said Ospreys head coach Mark Jones. “He brings a wealth of experience and leadership credentials with him.
“We feel Waisea can make an instant impact and be a real difference-maker for us in Owen’s absence, and stands us in good stead in a season where we still have a lot to play for.”
Ospreys are currently 14th on the URC table with a 4-1-6 record, and they complete their schedule with a trip to the republic to battle the Sharks (9 May) and Lions (17 May).
