Cheika to rebuild Wales, Franco too expensive?

Michael Cheika is favoured to become Wales head coach when his Leicester Tigers contract expires at the end of the season.
Warren Gatland quit the job after Wales’ defeat to Italy in Rome earlier this month – a 14th consecutive defeat for the Dragons.
Cardiff’s Matt Sherratt was appointed in a caretaker role for the rest of the Six Nations after which he will return to his club.
Former Italy coach Franco Smith has said he wants to work at Test level again but according to RugbyPass he has £500,000 compensation clause in his Glasgow Warriors contract that runs until the end of next season, which a cash-strapped WRU is unlikely to pay.
The website claims Cheika, who took the Wallabies to the 2015 World Cup final and Argentina to the 2023 World Cup semi-finals, is now the clear favourite for the Wales job and that he would relish the challenge of rebuilding the team.
Wales are currently 12th on the World Rugby rankings, below Georgia.
