Saffas Abroad: Pollard shines, Trokkie trucks Bulls

Leicester Tigers flyhalf Handre Pollard and Northampton Saints bruiser Juarno Augustus were the headliners for SA’s contingent of overseas-based players in the Investec Champions Cup on Saturday.

Champions Cup:
– Five first-half tries helped Leicester Tigers hammer the Sharks 56-17 at Welford Park in round 2. Pollard scored 17 points as they cruised to victory. Former Vodacom Bulls flanker Hanro Liebenberg also featured for the Tigers who will face the Bristol Bears in round 8 of the English Premiership on Saturday.


– Three South Africans featured for Sale Sharks in a 29-7 win against Racing 92 at the Salford Community Stadium. Jean-Luc du Preez dotted down for Sale, while flyhalf Rob du Preez added nine points from the boot. Sale’s Dan du Preez and former Stormers forward Hacjivah Dayimani started at No 8, respectively.

Juarno Augustus crossed the whitewash for Northampton Saints in their 30-21 away win against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld. Augustus has now scored three tries in two Champions Cup appearances this season.

– Leinster edged clermont 15-7 in Dublin in round 2. RG Snyman featured as a replacement loose forward for the four time Champions Cup winners.

– Harlequins cruised to a 53-16 win over the Stormers in London on Saturday. Prop Simon Kerrod, lock Irne Herbst and fullback Tyrone Green all started for Quins.

– Former Sharks fullback Rhyno Smith bagged a double for Benetton in their 22-21 win against Bath. Springbok prop Thomas du Toit came off the bench to score for Bath, while tighthead Francois van Wyk and scrumhalf Louis Schreuder started for the English Premiership side.

Challenge Cup:
– Former Bulls lock Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg started for Montpellier as they crushed Ospreys 59-15 at the CGL Stadium in Montpellier. Jan Serfontein featured off the bench for the hosts, while Daniel Kasende started on the wing for Ospreys. Replacement centre Evardi Boshoff dotted down for Ospreys in the fourth quarter,

–Hooker Dan Jooste opened the scoring for Section Paloise in their 43-35 loss against the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday.

– Replacement hooker Gareth Blackmore scored for Gloucester in their 43-19 defeat to RC Vannes at the Stade de la Rabine on Saturday.

– Former Cheetahs hooker Marnus van der Merwe started for the Scarlets, while former Stormers flanker Jarrod Taylor featured off the bench in a 36-18 win against the Black Lions.
