TOL Pod: Episode 29: And another thing …

AFTER a startling revelation about Burnsy’s upsetting his family with an overly emotional response to Scotland’s 2021 Calcutta Cup win over England at Twickenham, the boys turn their attention to the more sober task of picking through the debris and trying to digest the fall-out from Sunday’s hammering at the hands of Ireland.

Barney asks if it is any wonder that our Celtic cousins get so irritated by Scottish proclamations of confidence before these matches given how hard they have worked with razor-sharp focus over two decades to develop a strategy and build a culture designed to achieve consistent success at the highest level, while Scotland have been “half-assed” in their approach and then just roll up saying: ‘Maybe we’ll turn Ireland over this time because we’ve got a few handy players now!’

The big fella also has a few choice thoughts about Scottish Rugby’s new Performance Director David Nucifora‘s jet-setting approach to a role which really needs to have someone who is fully committed and ready to get under the skin of the game in this country in order to create the sort of player pathway model which is so desperately needed.

Club representatives invited to attend Professor Lorne Crerar briefing

There’s a noble attempt from Burnsy to lift the spirits by pointing out that things could be a lot worse, as rugby supporters in Wales will testify, but then brings the mood back down again as he considers the implications for Scotland of England’s shock victory over France at the weekend. Has any international team coughed up more scoring opportunities inside an 80-minutes window than France managed on Saturday?

What does Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend need to do to make sure Scotland are ready to defend the Calcutta Cup for an unprecedented fifth time? much will depend on Finn Russell and Darcy Graham’s recovery from that horrible head clash on Sunday. Who comes in if both those players are out? Is there scope to bolster the pack?

There’s also the usual round-up from the Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership, the Celtic Challenge and the rest of the domestic scene.
