THE HOWDEN MELROSE SEVENS men’s tournament will kick-off at 11am on Saturday 24th May with a clash between two of the grand old dames of Scottish rugby, featuring guest side London Scottish Lions and Edinburgh Accies.

In a new format twist, all guest teams will enter the competition in the first round, with the King of the Sevens teams joining in the last 16, recognising the intrinsic role these clubs have in sustaining the abbreviated format in Scotland.

Other key matchups include Heriots versus defending champions Shogun Rugby at 12:13pm, a west coast clash between Glasgow Accies versusandAyr Rugby at 1:06pm and Glasgow Hawks versus New Zealand's Te Awamutu at 12:48pm, while hosts Melrose to kick off their campaign at 2pm against the winner of the London Scottish versus Edinburgh Accies tie.

Meanwhile, the women’s event – the Breadalbane Doddie Claymore Competition – will run alongside the men's event, with the first tie at 1:25pm featuring Loughborough versus Shogun Rugby. The women’s teams will each play three matches, culminating in the final at 7:20pm. The men's final will follow at 7:45pm, with the day concluding with the Men's, Women's, and King of the Sevens presentation ceremonies.

Traditionally held on the second Saturday in April, this year’s event has moved to align with the Bank Holiday weekend in response to the extended fixture dates of the 2024-2025 Scottish Premiership league season. With the original April weekend now allocated as a standby date for rescheduled Premiership matches, the decision ensures the availability of top teams and referees for the event.

"The Howden Melrose Sevens has always been a key event in the Scottish rugby calendar, and we're excited to reveal the draws for both competitions,” said Tournament Director, Phil Morris. “Moving the tournament to the May Bank Holiday allows for better participation and ensures we can continue delivering top-quality rugby in Melrose. We're looking forward to a fantastic weekend of sevens and welcoming teams and fans to The Greenyards for what we hope will be a true celebration of the end of the Scottish rugby domestic season."
