GLASGOW have locked down one of their rising stars with Gregor Brown signing a two-year extension to his Scotstoun contract.

Brown has enjoyed a stellar season for club and country and demonstrated his versatility by playing in the second row for Scotland during the Six Nations.

The Aberdonian, a cousin of Scotland full-back Blair Kinghorn, is thought to have had offers to continue his rugby elsewhere but reiterated his commitment to Warriors after believing it remains the best place for his development.

That will be music to head coach Franco Smith's ears given the pending exits of Tom Jordan and Jack Mann, and Brown, a replacement in last year's URC grand final win over the Bulls, believes those who are hanging around are good enough to push for more honours.

The 23-year-old said: "It was a really easy decision for me to make. The players and the coaches that we’ve got staying here, they’re absolutely world class. They have been huge for my development over the last two years and I’m just looking to develop over the next two years as well.

"And then from a more personal standpoint, I grew up supporting Glasgow and watched the boys win in 2015. I remember watching that at home with my dad. And to then be over there in Pretoria and winning the URC was so huge for me. I’m just desperate to do something like that again.

"I won’t go into that [his other options]. But when I spoke to my agent to start with, I was very clear with him and he fully supported my decision. Even he could see over the past few years just how much I’ve developed at Glasgow and it was such an easy decision going off the last two years.

"If the next two years can be anywhere near as good, then why would I try to go anywhere else? So, from all parties, I think, it was kind of straightforward, which was good.

"Richie Gray has left and some other boys are leaving but we’ve got such an exciting mix of really experienced older boys that are staying, that have signed on, and also young boys that have come through in the past few years and have gained a lot of experience and are not young boys anymore. And I think like the blend of that in this season and the next couple of seasons is going to be really exciting."

Brown has developed at an incredible rate over the past two years but knows he remains far from the finished article.

He added: "There's some stuff defensively [he can improve on]. The Six Nations was really good to see what things that you might be able to get away with against some club teams or even against some lesser international teams compared to your France’s, England, stuff like that.

"Things that you can get away with in those games, you can’t get away with when you’re playing France, England or Ireland. Stuff around the breakdown and how Ireland tested us there definitely opened my eyes a little bit. I’ve still got quite a way to go in that department.

“And then there’s some stuff defensively as well that, you know, playing against some bigger boys and getting used to that, that I definitely want to work on."

Smith added: "Gregor's development has been extremely impressive over the last two seasons, and we are delighted to retain a player of his potential.

"He is someone who is willing to give their all to be a Glasgow Warrior, with his performances in both the back-row and second-row showing the full range of his skill set.

"We're excited to continue to work with him over the coming seasons, as we work to help him become the best version of himself both on and off the field."

Meanwhile, Glasgow academy winger Amena Caqusau will join Northampton Saints this summer.

Glasgow Warriors will be supporting Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity at Scotstoun this Saturday as the Emirates Lions are the visitors for the fifth annual Plaster It Purple fixture. To find out more and to donate, click HERE.
