EDINBURGH back-five forward Sam Skinner has been  added to Scotland’s Six Nations training squad ahead of Sunday’s round two match against Ireland in Dublin.

The 30-year0-old earned the last of his 35 caps to date as a replacement against Ireland at the conclusion of last year’s championship, but missed most of the first half of this season following knee surgery during the summer. He has now managed eight matches at club level and could be in line for a dramatic return to the match-day 23 this coming weekend as head coach Gregor Townsend searches for both bulk and dynamism to match the power of Ireland in the middle and back-rows of the scrum.

No new players have been listed as injured following last Saturday’s opening round win over Italy, although it seems likely that one of the six second-row contenders already in the squad is at least struggling to train at the moment given the timing of this call-up.

Scotland, who are without both Scott Cummings and Max Williamson in this Six Nations due to injury, started Saturday’s match against Italy with veterans Jonny Gray and Grant Gilchrist as the locks, while Gregor Brown – who, like Skinner, is a second-row/No6 hybrid player – came off the bench as a replacement for Gray during the final 20 minutes.

Townsend also called Cameron Henderson of Leicester Tigers and Ewan Johnson of Oyannax into his training squad on the Monday before the Italy match, while Marshall Sykes is the other second-row in the group.
