Top 10 most overrated rugby players in history controversially ranked by fans
Yesterday at 04:19 PM
Rugby fans constantly brandish certain players as overrated for a number of reasons and, according to a fan survey, one certain England star has made the list.
Debating the ranking of footballers is a constant talking point for fans across the planet, and with that the terms ‘overrated’ and ‘underrated’ are constantly thrown around as supporters argue their case for and against some of the biggest stars.
Some could be classed as genuine opinions while others may be tainted with bias.
The players just get on with it by doing their talking on the pitch and let the fans decide amongst themselves on social media, which can often cause some to go overboard with their criticism.
Here, RUCK have filtered through the list and compiled the top 10 most overrated footballers as voted by fans. But who is top of the list?

10. Chris Ashton
“Lazy player with a terrible work rate. Decent positioning at times that sees him finish off the good work of others and get all the undeserved credit. Poor tackler too.”
"That man lived off his 'solo' try against Australia and managed to get in the England team every time. He couldn't tackle a crossword! Lacks creativity and only works running a line off a short pass from the number ten. Overrated definitely!"
9. James O’Connor
Despite early promise, fans often label the Aussie utility back as “flashy without substance.” Once touted as a future great, many now view his career as unfulfilled potential.
8. George North
“He had a few good years between 2011-2013, and then he has died down. Hasn’t looked as good as the commentary teams make him out to be.”
"George bloody North!"
"I think it's important to separate the player he was back in 2013 with the player he became once injury and loss of form hit. Definitely overrated, but I think that’s the media’s fault.”
7. Manu Tuilagi
A powerhouse on his day, Tuilagi's frequent injuries and lack of consistency leave many questioning whether his reputation outshines his performances.
6. Alun Wyn Jones
“Maybe he got so many caps because there's been such a paucity of Welsh second rows. Maybe.”
"At this point, he only gets chosen because Wales Online will go nuclear and blow up Cardiff if he doesn't."
"I really, really, really don't understand why he is rated so highly."
One fan countered: “Maybe he's got 12 Lions caps in a row, won numerous 6N championships, been nominated for World Player of the Year twice, and is the record cap holder in history because he is one of the greatest locks of all time… maybe.”
5. Finn Russell
The mercurial Scot divides opinion. While some adore his flair, others find his erratic decision-making and inconsistency frustrating.
4. Danny Cipriani
Once England's golden boy, Cipriani's off-field antics and patchy international career overshadow his undeniable talent. Many fans argue his hype far exceeded his impact.
3. Gavin Henson
Known for his celebrity lifestyle as much as his rugby, Henson's flashy moments couldn't mask his struggles to fulfill early career expectations.
2. Sergio Parisse
“Going to be controversial, but Sergio Parisse. Sure, he had fantastic skills, but he was a show pony and not a workhorse. People often overlooked this.”
"I think Parisse got a lot of credit just for being a leader and a quality player in a poor Italy side. He was never rated by anyone as anywhere near world-class."
“Consistently made World XV teams on scant evidence. Never has a cliche fit a player more than ‘overrated show pony.'”
1. Sebastien Chabal
“The French forward is a player who jumps to mind.”
"His appearance was half his reputation. Whenever he was given the appropriate attention, he folded."
"Talented athlete who put in the odd big tackle, but when push came to shove, he always seemed to wilt away from the physical side of the game."
"Good 6, terrible 8. Overhyped, plain and simple."
