England's decision to select Tom Curry has caused a stir this week after the flanker endured two concussions in just five weeks.

Curry was knocked out during last week's defeat to Australia and has now been recalled to the England squad following the completion of his 12-day stand-down period on Thursday. The 25-year-old has passed all medical checks to play against Japan, but the decision has faced strong criticism from Dr. Willie Stewart, former adviser to World Rugby.

“At a time when we are making great progress in UK-wide concussion management across grassroots sport, it is so important this progress isn’t undermined by elite sport focusing on results over welfare,” said Dr. Stewart.

“Unfortunately, some sports just seem unable to read the room or recognise the damage their actions can lead to, both for individual players and wider (particularly youth) participants and participation.”

Curry’s selection comes at the expense of Chandler Cunningham-South as England seek to end their five-match losing streak. However, with Curry now just one more concussion away from being sidelined for three months, the decision feels like a significant risk.

A similar situation occurred in November 2021 when South Africa’s Eben Etzebeth was stood down following his third concussion of the year.

"After specialist advice and in accordance with the concussion management protocol of the National Rugby League, the player must observe a three-month break," said Toulon in a statement.

"Rugby Club Toulonnais wishes Eben Etzebeth a speedy recovery."
