According to The Roar, the 55-year-old has already met with a Rugby Australia official about the soon-to-be-vacant position.
Lancaster, who left Racing 92 earlier this year, has a long-standing relationship with Schmidt from their time in Ireland – with Schmidt leading the national side while Lancaster masterminded Leinster's resurgence from 2016.
Kiss Leads the Race… For Now
Reds coach Les Kiss remains the favourite, but his Super Rugby contract runs until 2026, adding a layer of complexity to any potential move. Other domestic candidates, including Dan McKellar and Stephen Larkham, are also tied up with long-term commitments, making negotiations tricky.
