Former Scotland rugby union captain Stuart Hogg has been hit with a one-year community payback order following his admission to a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife.

The 32-year-old's troubles don't stop there. He previously faced a five-year non-harassment order and a fine of £600 after violating bail conditions.
Hogg's abusive behaviour exposed
Appearing at Selkirk Sheriff Court, Hogg admitted to shouting, swearing, and acting in an abusive manner towards his wife, Gillian.
The court responded with a payback order, which means Hogg will now undertake supervised community work. Once again, a non-harassment order was imposed to protect his estranged wife.
Sheriff Peter Paterson made it clear this sentence was a direct alternative to custody. Hogg's compliance with the payback order will be reviewed on March 25 at Jedburgh Sheriff Court, where he must appear in person.
The damning testimony
In court, it was revealed that Hogg's pattern of shouting and swearing at his wife had been ongoing for years. Lynne Barrie, procurator fiscal for Lothian and Borders, emphasized the gravity of the situation: "No-one should have to live in fear of a partner or former partner." She urged victims of similar abuse to come forward and highlighted the devastating impact domestic abuse has on victims and their children.
Monitoring and harassment uncovered
Last year, Hogg, who currently plays for Montpellier, admitted to repeated abusive behaviour over a five-year span, up until August 2023. The shocking details included his use of the "Find My Phone" app to monitor Gillian's movements and bombarding her with hundreds of text messages in mere hours.
From hero to cautionary tale
Once celebrated as one of Scotland's finest rugby players, Hogg's fall from grace is stark. The former Glasgow Warriors fullback, who earned over 100 caps and represented the British and Irish Lions on three tours, was even awarded an MBE in 2024 for his services to rugby.
Despite retiring from international rugby, Hogg made headlines again last summer by signing a two-year deal with Montpellier. Now, the headlines are about his court appearances rather than his on-field heroics.
