Statement: Lions and Wales legend Jonathan Davies has retired with immediate effect

Welsh rugby star Jonathan Davies has officially retired from the sport, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades.

The 36-year-old, who left the Scarlets last season, had considered a final playing opportunity but has now decided to focus on family life following the birth of his first child.

Career Highlights

Davies leaves behind an impressive rugby legacy, boasting 96 international caps for Wales and two British & Irish Lions tours. He also played 209 matches for the Scarlets and had a successful stint with French side Clermont Auvergne. His career is adorned with achievements, including two Six Nations Grand Slams and a Pro 12 title.

Reflecting on His Career

In a statement, Davies shared his thoughts on leaving the sport, saying:
"I will inevitably miss the camaraderie of training and playing competitively alongside my teammates, but over these past few months, I have been able to assess all of my options and reflect on a career of which I am incredibly proud."

Gratitude to Supporters

Davies expressed his deep appreciation for those who supported him throughout his journey:
"There are too many people to thank; the dedicated and loyal fans, quality teammates, supportive coaches, staff, friends, and most of all, my family, all who have believed in me."

He also acknowledged the challenges he faced, especially overcoming injuries:
"I am so grateful for the support, especially when faced with the challenges and setbacks of injuries. It’s been an incredible ride, with two Lions tours, two Grand Slams, and the Pro 12 title to name a few."

Looking Ahead

As he steps into the next phase of his life, Davies looks forward to new opportunities, both personally and professionally.
"I now look forward to what the next 18 will bring, as a father, a husband, and in my next professional chapter. Diolch, Foxy."
