Tries from Josh Hathaway and Jack Clement gave the hosts a well deserved victory in an extremely physical encounter.

Gloucester opened the scoring eleven minutes in as Josh Hathaway found the corner after a powerfully won scrum from the Gloucester pack. Santi Carreras converted with his first attempt from the Tee giving the home side an early lead in front of a sold out Kingsholm. Gloucester thought they extended their lead ten minutes after but Afolabi Fasbogon lost control of the ball as he dived for the line, much to the dismay of the Cherry and White faithful.

Gloucester finally got their well deserved second try when a driving maul powered through the Harlequins pack on the half hour mark with Jack Clement getting the spoils. Carreras once more got the kick putting the hosts up 14-0.

HALF TIME: Gloucester 14-0 Harlequins

The second half started off slowly but Quins thought they'd finally broken the deadlock when a thunderous line from Dino Lamb caught Gloucester's defence sleeping, however this time it was the visitors turn to have a try disallowed when referee Christoph Ridley called it back for a forward pass.

A penalty attempt from Carreras was dragged wide of the post 65 minutes in preventing Gloucester from opening the second half scoring in what has been a very physical encounter in which some superb defending has been on display from both sides.

Gloucester player ratings

  1. Ciaran Knight – 7/10 – A late minute replacement for Val Rapava Ruskin, Knight stepped up well. The loosehead prop constantly had the better of his opposite man in the scrum and a constant presence at the breakdown. Knight was a main figure of the Gloucester forward pack dominance.

2. Seb Blake – 8/10 – Probably the best of the starting front three for Gloucester, Blake seemed to cover every blade of grass on the Kingsholm turf. He made multiple tackles and was disruptive in the breakdown putting the Quins scrum half under pressure to get the ball out quickly from every ruck.

3. Afolabi Fasogbon – 7/10 – Only giving Fasogbon a seven feels harsh but the prop was taken off with injury only 35 minutes into the match. The tighthead was outstanding in the short cameo he had however, multiple scrum penalties won and some strong carries really helped the Gloucester pack dominate early on. Another brilliant performance from the young star in what has been an outstanding breakout season thus far.

4. Freddie Thomas – 8/10 – Thomas commanded the lineout expertly and was a calm and collected head throughout. He was immense for Gloucester tonight and is having himself a superb breakout season and if he keeps this up, deserves his place in the Wales six nations squad.

5. Matias Alemanno – 6/10 – it was a slightly quiet day for Alemanno, a big presence at the lineout and a lot of the dirty work done in the breakdown by the Argentinian kept the Gloucester pack constantly ticking.

6. Jack Clement – 9/10 – One of, if not, the best players on the pitch this evening, Clement scored one and was a main part of the maul which helped set up the other. He did everything you ask a flanker to do and did it all superbly, breakdown, carries, open play all sublime. Another very strong performance in what has been a great season so far.

7. Lewis Ludlow (captain) – 7/10 – The Gloucester captain led by example, constantly putting his body on the line to make tackles and being the focal point of the carries for Gloucester. Another great game for the Gloucester talisman.

8. Ruan Ackermann – 7/10 – Once again another dominant display from a member of the Gloucester pack.Ackermann controlled play well and made some vital tackles which kept Quins off of the scoreboard.

9. Tomos Williams – 8/10 – Arguably the signing of the season in the premiership, Williams controlled tempo and pace well throughout and set up some great chances for his teammates. He constantly has the better of his opposite number and his excellent season just keeps getting better.

10. Gareth Anscombe – 7/10 – Anscombe commanded his team well, provided some lovely bits of play and a couple looping passes which set up Hathaway and Wade on the wings with some big runs. Another strong performance for the fly half in what has turned out as an excellent signing for the Cherry and Whites.

11. Josh Hathaway – 8/10 – An early try for the Gloucester academy prospect started the game off on the right foot for the Cherry and Whites. Hathaway was strong in his carries and excellent defensively, some silly handling errors hold him back from getting a higher rating but overall, a great game for the young Welshman.

12. Seb Atkinson – 9/10 – Todays Man of The Match, Atkinson was excellent, stepped up massively as he always does, one of the players of the season for Gloucester and its clear to see his full of confidence.

13. Max Llewellyn – 6/10 – Llewellyn was kept quiet most of the game through the amount of play that the forwards got. He was clinical when he got the ball however and some strong carries and shifty footwork got the crowd on their feet.

14. Christian Wade – 7/10 – Just like Llewellyn, Wade was kept relatively quiet but what an impact he did make with his few chances, the winger was darting in and out of tackles, making defenders miss and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

15. Santi Carreras – 8/10 – He's a fan favourite at Kingsholm for a reason and games like today prove why. A well rounded performance from the Argentinian saw him crucial in both attack and defence for Gloucester. He slotted in at fly half after Anscombe was substituted and filled in effortlessly, an extremely skilled player and showed up tonight in a big fashion.

REPLACEMENTS

16. Jack Singleton – 6/10 – Singleton had a relatively simple appearance tonight, his 20 minutes on the pitch saw much kicking for territory but he was solid in his scrums and lineouts when called upon.

17. Mayco Vivas – 6/10 – much like Singleton, Vivas had a relatively simple job tonight, he put in some heavy hits and defensively was solid.

18. Kirill Gotovtsev – 7/10 – A first half substitution saw Gotovtsev come on earlier than many would've thought but he picked up exactly where Fasogbon left off and was superb in the scrum.

19. Cam Jordan –  6/10 – Jordan did well in his short cameo on the pitch, put in some big hits and forced a turnover carrying on his good form this season.

20. Albert Tuisue – N/A

21. Caolan Englefield – N/A

22. Chris Harris – N/A

23. George Barton – 6/10 – Barton slotted in at full back for the final quarter of the game, vocal in both attack and defence he made a pair of beautiful clearance kicks which removed the pressure from the Quins attack.
