Saracens secured their first win of their 20245/25 Investec Champions Cup campaign with a 27-5 win over the Vodac om Bulls. The stormy conditions at the StoneX Stadium made for a difficult afternoon for attacking flair, yet Sarries surged to a win through four tries from their forward pack.

Rhys Carre, Jamie George, Tom Willis and Ben Earl all got on the score-sheet, with the North Londoners off the mark in club rugby’s pinnacle competition.

The swirling winds of Storm Darragh were felt down at the StoneX Stadium, with difficult kicking conditions defining the low-scoring first half. Fergus Burke struggled to find touch on a handful of clearence kicks, with the ball sent back in-field by the strong gusts. The Bulls were first to break the deadlock, as Willie le Roux sent a miss pass out wide to Sebastian de Klerk. The flyer skipped past Elliot Daly’s tackle attempt, and dotted down in style to open up the visitors checkbook.

The strong winds made the subsequent conversion an impossible task from out wide, with Saracens levelling the match to 5-5 after 23 minutes. Shorts picks over the gain-line was the order of the day, with Welsh prop Rhys Carre battering his way over for the crucial yards. After Burke sent a close range conversion into the posts, the New Zealander did manage to add some points off the tee in the first 40 minutes. Nick Tompkins had the honor of holding the ball on the tee, with Burke sending a penalty through the sticks for an 8-5 lead at half-time.

Bulls dropped to 13 men early in the second half, as they picked up two yellow cards in quick succession. Replacement lock Jannes Kirsten and try-scoring wing Sebastian de Klerk were sent to the bin, and Saracens took advantage right away. Jamie George led the charge, as the England hooker grounded a strong rolling maul. Saracens followed this up with a try from Tom Willis, as the back-row broke through the Bulls from close range, who had begun to capitulate when playing into the wind.

Saracens hit their revered top gear into the final quarter of the match, with Ben Earl having a try-scoring impact off the bench. The back row muscled his way along the left wing, for a strong solo score from 10m out.
