The match marked Ireland's most convincing performance of the autumn internationals. Coming off a narrow victory over Argentina and a loss to New Zealand, a much-rotated Irish squad wasted no time asserting their dominance over Fiji.
Despite the impressive result, attention was unfairly diverted as Davidson faced abusive comments on social media. However, rugby fans rallied to her defense, praising her performance and calling out the unacceptable behavior.
One fan wrote: “The sexism around Hollie Davidson is really obvious. Do better lads.”
Another added: “The amount of sexist comments I've seen about Hollie Davidson on social media is disgraceful. She does a better job than some male referees I've seen. No place for that garbage in Rugby or life.”
Davidson's composure and professionalism during the match earned admiration from many supporters, with one fan noting: “Well done Hollie Davidson a super ref. Cracking game tonight. For those on about red/yellow that’s bunker review not ref call. Loved fact when she got walloped she took time to let play develop then review. Well done.”
Another celebrated rugby's ethos of respect, saying: “Reason I love rugby – men’s international being refereed by the amazing Hollie Davidson and all 30 men respecting her decision without a question.”
Davidson's display not only showcased her skill as a referee but also highlighted the need for continued vigilance in combating sexism within the sport.
