Rugby star Joe Marler has revealed his calorie-busting post-match meal, and it’s not for the faint hearted.

Marler called time on international rugby last week having earned 95 caps for England over a 12 year period.

The Harlequins prop pulled out of the Autumn England camp due to 'personal reasons' before later announcing his surprise retirement.

Marler admitted he could no longer keep up with the demands of international rugby after attending a week-long training camp in Spain.

He said: "I did the Girona training week but at the end of the last training session, knackered, I sat in the sun thinking, 'I can't do this anymore'.”

He added that: “The game's passed me by now, I can't keep up. It was sad to admit. How long can you flog a dead horse?”

Marler is not yet ready to throw in the towel completely and will continue his club career with Harlequins for a little while longer.

And that spells good news for the 34-year-old and his post-match ritual which includes an almighty feast that many of us would struggle to emulate.

For Marler, there is only one way to replenish his body with calories after a hard-fought match – a trip to McDonald's.

But this is no ordinary order. On the contrary, Marler is only too happy to indulge on a selection of items from his list of favourites in what would constitute more than a day's worth of eating for the regular person.

Asked what he eats after a match, Marler told talkSPORT: "I usually have a big old McDonald's order.

"You're looking at 20 nuggets, a large big mac meal and two cheeseburgers. I'd usually chuck a milkshake in there and I quite like the chicken and bacon wraps they do as well.

"I'd often text that to an old team mate. I'd be desperate to get to after the game and that's regardless of whether I played 80 minutes or one minute.

Marler's fast-food haven is even more striking when it comes to the calorific content of the order.

His large big mac meal with milkshake comes in at a whopping 1900 calories while the 20 chicken nuggets equate to 863 calories.

The two cheeseburgers combined are to the value of 600 calories with the chicken and bacon wrap added a further 492.

That equates to a total of 3,855 calories for the post-match meal alone.

The average active adult male requires between 2,400-3,000 calories per day but as Marler is a professional athlete, that will be slightly higher.

Therefore, including breakfast, pre-match meals, snacks, drinks and evening meals, Marler's match-day calorie intake is likely to surpass 5,000 calories.

The star's local McDonald's can rest assured that as long as he continues to perform for Harlequins, his mammoth weekend order will show no signs of letting up anytime soon.
