Rugby transfer expert Neil Fissler reports that Cheika's expected appointment has hit a roadblock. The Leicester Tigershead coach, who was the bookies' favourite after Warren Gatland's sacking, is now in talks with Racing 92 about a move to France.

With Cheika's future uncertain, the WRU is considering other options, and Lam's name has entered the conversation.

Lam's credentials and contract situation

The 56-year-old Samoan, who famously helped Samoa stun Wales at the 1999 World Cup, started his coaching career with Scotland in 2003 before spells at Auckland, Connacht, and now Bristol.

Despite signing a five-year extension in 2021, keeping him at Ashton Gate until 2028, Lam has yet to deliver a Premiership or European Champions Cup title.

A Welsh connection?

In a recent interview, Lam spoke glowingly about the Principality Stadium, ahead of Bristol's Big Day Out against Bath on May 10th.

"It is, to me, the best stadium in the world. It is right on top of you. And when the roof is closed, the noise just doubles in volume. It's just a brilliant place," he said.

Could that admiration turn into something more? With Cheika's future up in the air, Lam is now a surprise contenderfor the Wales job.
