Springboks' record against Scotland: Eight wins on the bounce

The Springboks’ most recent win against Scotland came during the pool stages of last year’s World Cup, which preceded South Africa’s charge to the Webb Ellis Cup.

Prior to that clash, Rassie Erasmus had placed a huge emphasis on ensuring an ever-improving Scotland team was not taken lightly, and ultimately the Springboks did enough to claim a comfortable 18-3 victory.

It was the eighth successive win over the Scots, with their last defeat coming in a shock 21-17 result in Edinburgh back in 2010.

Before that loss, the Springboks had won seven matches in succession. In fact the only other defeat that has come during the professional era was back in 2002 at Murrayfield.

Despite such an emphatic record, the Springboks remain ever wary of a dangerous Scotland side that is currently ranked seventh in the world, and not all that far behind Argentina and England.

SPRINGBOKS’ RESULTS AGAINST SCOTLAND:

CURRENT WORLD RANKINGS

Meanwhile, Scotland lock Scott Cummings said there would certainly be no shortage of motivation as they face up to the Springboks at Murrayfield on Sunday.

"Obviously we've played some of them, but they're playing in different teams, different systems," Cummings said, as quoted by The Scotsman. "You can pick up some things they try and do, but it's a different set-up with South Africa. It's a step up, so we'll be expecting a tough challenge."

"Playing international rugby, you're going to come up against great players and South Africa are obviously some of the best just now," said Cummings. "They've been back-to-back world champions and they are that big-ticket match.

"They're going to bring their gameplan and it's up to us to stop that and impose our gameplan."

Following their convincing 57-17 victory over Fiji last weekend, Cummings believes Scotland are well-positioned for Sunday's clash.

"I wouldn't say we use that [World Cup loss] as motivation. I think playing the world champs is all the motivation you need," he explained. "A lot changes in a year. There's different players in, different people in different set-ups.

"They've changed quite a lot of their players and we'll be going in there with some confidence next weekend. It's at Murrayfield, which is exciting for us and we can't wait for the weekend."
