Springboks new era: New coach and captain candidates revealed

Even the legendary Rassie Erasmus and iconic Siya Kolisi will have to be replaced by the Springboks.

The Springboks are set to appoint a new coach to replace Rassie Erasmus after the 2027 Rugby World Cup. This is because his contract runs until the end of 2027. So, mission three-peat is on the agenda but thereafter, so is the task of finding a replacement coach.

Meanwhile, Bok skipper, Siya Kolisi is also entering the latter stages of his career. Kolisi will be 36 at the next Rugby World Cup so he is unlikely to continue to skipper the Boks. For both men, mission three-peat (winning three succussive Rugby World Cup trophies) is the focus and it would be the perfect end to their illustrious, legendary and iconic careers.

So, lets take a look at the men next in line to coach the Springboks as well as who the next Bok captain is likely to be.

RASSIES SUCCESSOR: THE CANDIDATES

Currently, these three men are the favourites to replace Rassie Erasmus as Springboks coach after the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Mzwandile Stick, Felix Jones and Daan Human.

Ultimately, SA Rugby is likely to select a man who has been a part of their system for many seasons. All of these men have played an instrumental role in the Boks recent succuss as assistant coaches.

Stick, to many is the favourite given the fact that he is local. This gives him an edge over Jones who is irish-born. Meanwhile, Human has the same advantage but he seems happy in his current role.

However, Felix remains a strong candidate given his influence, wisdom and expertise.

SIYA’S SUCCESSOR: FUTURE BOK CAPTAIN

The honour of leading the Springboks is up their with the SA presidency itself.

Kolisi is a role model to millions of people and he has helped unite a nation. Furthermore, the Sharks and Boks skipper has captained the Boks to two Rugby World Cups, two Rugby Championships, A British & Irish Lions series victory as well as the Nelson Mandela Plate and Freedom Cup trophy.

Meaning, the next captain has massive boots to fill.

Thankfully, all of the current leaders in Rassie’s plans have a plethora of experience and they have all captained the Boks in several test matches in recent seasons.

"Obviously there are some other options. Eben (Etzebeth), Bongi (Mbonambi) and Pieter-Steph (du Toit) have been captains. But if Siya is fit, healthy and playing well, then I don't think there will be a change this year," Rassie told the SA Rugby media.

Therefore, when Siya is injured or unavailable one of these men will wear the captains armband.
