Former Wales coach Warren Gatland is gutted with the results in his second stint at the helm and he cautioned potential successors to brace for unrelenting criticism.

“They need a thick skin for a start,” Gatland told The Telegraph in an exclusive interview, referring to the negative press Wales received during a record run of 14 consecutive defeats.

The 61-year-old kiwi stepped down after Wales suffered a 22-15 reverse against Italy earlier this month, a decision he had made in the build-up to the Test in Rome.

“I understood there were a lot of people saying how important the game is,” he said. “The Friday or Saturday before the game, I made sort of a decision without thinking too much about it – if we didn't win that game, then I'd have to seriously consider my position.”

Gatland admitted the negative atmosphere had taken its toll” “Am I hurting a little bit? Yes, of course I am hurting.” However, he was quick to add that he would soon focus on the positive memories from his time with Wales.

During his first stint with Wales, between 2007 and 2019, they won three Six Nations Grand Slams and advanced to the final four of the 2011 and 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Gatland highlighted the need in Wales for a strategic director of rugby to make tough decisions, structural and personnel, without aiming to please everyone.

He suggested a deep overhaul, particularly in youth development and academies, to counter the talent drain to England and to match the success of systems in New Zealand, South Africa, and Ireland. He stressed the historical setbacks in Welsh rugby due to economic and political factors and the necessity for investment in schools rugby to regain competitive edge.

As for his own future, Gatland mentioned the possibility of returning to international rugby for World Cup cycles, indicating a need for a break but openness to new opportunities. “If something comes up in the future about potentially being involved with a nation for my experience in terms of preparing for World Cups, I’d be excited by something like that.”
