A veteran Stormers prop says it’s time for him to “pass the baton” to the youngsters at the end of the season.

Brok Harris, who will turn 40 on Saturday, has finally decided to end his 19-year career.

Harris represented Western Province and the Stormers from 2006 to 2014 before a seven-year stint with the Dragons in Wales. He was brought back to Cape Town in 2021 by Stormers coach John Dobson and has played valuable playing and mentorship roles.

“I don’t plan on playing another season. There’s a time to come and a time to go. I’ve had a good innings,” he told Netwerk24.

“I said last year that this season was my last one, but this time it’s a bit more final!

“I could do it week in and week out if I could just show up and play, but unfortunately you can’t do it at this level. You have to train hard too.

“It’s time to pass the baton to the young guys.”

Harris has earned 165 caps for the Stormers and 120 for WP, with his 143 appearances for the Dragons taking his first-class tally to an incredible 428.

“The first thing is grace from above,” Harris said when asked about his longevity.

I always tell the young guys that the pre-season is very important. Once the season is underway, you can’t work on your strength.

“The secret is probably just a good pre-season and to have balance. You can’t just work hard. You also have to spend time away from the field with friends and family.”
