The opening round of the 2025 Six Nations takes place this week, with Friday’s clash between France and Wales at the Stade de France the curtain-raiser.

Scotland welcome Italy to Murrayfield in the first of two Saturday fixtures, with England’s trip to the Aviva Stadium to face two-time defending champions Ireland rounding off the action.

Six Nations Week 1 tips

France v Wales – Friday, January 31st (20:15 KO)

Theo Attissogbe anytime tryscorer @ 1/1

Wales could be in for a tough evening at the Stade de France, a stadium where they have lost on their last three visits, as they come up against a French side who have both Romaine Ntamack and Antoine Dupont back in the starting XV.

The duo were missing for the 2024 Six Nations – Ntamack injured and Dupont preparing for the Olympics – but having the talismanic pair back will provide strength and stability to France.

Wales are on a record run of 12 successive Test defeats, last triumphing against Georgia at the 2023 World Cup, and they have conceded 395 points during this dismal period at an average of 32 per game.

You can take your pick of potential tryscorers for the French, but 20-year-old winger Theo Attissogbe gets the nod to grab his third international try on his fourth appearance.

Attissogbe crossed the whitewash in both clashes against Argentina in July last year and he can weave his way through a suspect Welsh defence.

Scotland v Italy – Saturday, February 1st (14:15 KO)

Scotland v Italy – Italy +18 Handicap @ 19/20

With three home games this year, Scotland will fancy their chances of mounting a strong challenge for the title, and while they should get off to a winning start against Italy, they may not have everything their own way.

Italy are an improving side, picking up five Test victories in 2024, drawing 13-13 against France and also running England close when going down 27-24 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Gli Azzurri won the last meeting against the Scots, triumphing 31-29 in Rome, and they have covered a +18 handicap in eight of the last nine clashes against Gregor Townsend’s side.

Ireland v England – Saturday, February 1st (16:45 KO)

Ireland v England – Under 44.5 points @ 5/6

Ireland’s bid to become the first team to win three Six Nations in a row begins with a stern test at home to England, who will be hoping to move on from a disappointing 2024.

Head coach Steve Borthwick would love to start off with a victory at the Aviva Stadium, but that may be easier said than done as they haven’t triumphed in Dublin since February 2019.

The Irish will be without head coach Andy Farrell, who is preparing for the British & Irish Lions series in the summer, so Simon Easterby has been placed in interim charge for the Six Nations.

That could potentially disrupt the flow of this Ireland side and this contest could turn out to be a gritty affair lacking the same kind of flair that is likely to be seen in Paris on Friday.

Both sides could deploy a game plan that heavily involves the forwards and points may be hard to come by.
