Hartzenberg raring to go for DHL WP

Suleiman Hartzenberg is relishing the opportunity to come flying out blocks in the blue and white hoops of DHL Western Province in Kimberley this week.

The 21-year-old outside back has thrilled fans with his electrifying pace and elite finishing for the DHL Stormers in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and Investec Champions Cup.

Now, after a strong pre-season, Hartzenberg is in line to make his first appearance of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup against Suzuki Griquas at the Suzuki Stadium on Friday, in the final round of the regular season.

"I'm super excited, especially to be back out playing for DHL Western Province," Hartzenberg said. "Pre-season training has been good, implementing some new strategies that have helped achieve what we've done so far this season.

"I'm looking forward to the Suzuki Griquas game, to see where all the hard work I've put in helps me."

It's been a productive period for Hartzenberg, who's had to bide his time to represent DHL Western Province again after a disappointing end to last year's Carling Currie Cup campaign due to injury.

"It was unfortunate to get injured at the end of the Carling Currie Cup last year, but I took it as an experience and worked on getting back and performing for the DHL Stormers," he said.

"I was able to get a few games last season in the blue and white hoops, so hopefully I can add to that this weekend."

His time away from the pitch has deepened his hunger to improve, and he's been tirelessly preparing for the 2024-25 campaign. Able to play wing and outside centre, the former Junior Springbok is an invaluable asset to the DHL Stormers.

His performances for the DHL Stormers have not only impressed his coaches but also caught the attention of national selectors. Hartzenberg has been included in two national alignment camps this year, yet the Bishops alum is keeping his focus on the here and now.

"With regards to possibly representing the Springboks, for me to get there I have to play well for the DHL Stormers and start regularly," Hartzenberg explained. "If I do that and focus on the DHL Stormers, the future will take care of itself."

Friday's encounter will potentially be Hartzenberg's first clash in the City of Diamonds, and he's well aware of the challenge that awaits. Suzuki Griquas are renowned for their rugged style and attacking flair, and with their play-off hopes dashed, will be highly motivated.

"I'm interested to see how it goes for me in Kimberley because I've heard about the altitude and the weather, and a 3pm kick-off isn't an easy time to play a match," Hartzenberg said.

"Suzuki Griquas are going to come out firing in their last game of this year's Carling Currie Cup. We expect them to run the ball."

Despite the tough conditions, Hartzenberg is determined to give his best performance for DHL Western Province: "I don't think either team will take things lightly this weekend. We're not going to stand back, and tackle the challenge head-on."
