BREAKING: The name change that puts Stormers on a sound footing

NEWS: The professional arm of Western Province Rugby is undergoing a name change as part of the new chapter under the recent equity deal

CEO Johan le Roux confirmed on Tuesday that Western Province Professional Rugby (WPPR) will henceforth be known as Stormers Rugby.

Le Roux, who is a major roleplayer in the Red Disa Consortium as head of Fynbos Ekwiteit, said the name change was brought on due to the company's goal of establishing a clear separation between the professional arm and the amateur arm, which is the Western Province Rugby Football Union.

Last month, the Red Disa consortium concluded its equity deal to secure a controlling shareholding in the professional arm.

The consortium owns 74 percent of Stormers Rugby with the WPRFU retaining the remaining 26 percent.

There is a lot of stigma attached to WPRFU name due to the large debt accrued by the union since 2018.

It sees all of the union's properties bonded to the Flyt property group.

The ongoing issue around the sale of Newlands has been at the forefront of problems plaguing the union.
