Gloucester powerhouse Zach Mercer is reportedly on his way back to France, with Toulon securing a major transfer coup ahead of the 2025/26 season.

According to Gloucestershire Live, the Cherry and Whites have agreed to release the No.8 from the final two years of his four-year contract — meaning Mercer's Kingsholm career is effectively over.
With injury ruling the back-rower out for the remainder of the season, he's almost certainly played his final match in the famous red jersey.
From Montpellier Magic to Cherry and White Blues
Mercer, 27, was previously a sensation in the Top 14, where he claimed the 2021/22 Player of the Year crown and guided Montpellier to their first-ever league title. That fairytale French stint came to an end in 2023 when the back-rower returned to England, chasing both international honours and a chance to be closer to his wife's family.
But things didn't go quite to plan.
Despite early interest from Eddie Jones, Mercer was left out in the cold following the Aussie's departure. The expected England revival? Never materialised.
Dressing Room Disruption Ends in Departure
Reports suggest Mercer's uncertain future had become a distraction at Gloucester, with club bosses keen to draw a line under the saga. Toulon's swoop now brings much-needed clarity — and arguably, a sigh of relief.
The deal is set to be made official in the coming weeks, and it’s one that could shake up the Top 14 landscape once again.
England Caps, French Glory & One Final Flourish?
Standing at 6'3" and weighing in at 111kg, Mercer is a dynamic, ball-carrying brute. He earned two senior England capsand captained the England U20s on 10 occasions out of 17 total appearances. A World Rugby Junior Player of the Year nominee in 2017, he made his full England debut against Japan in the 2018 Autumn Internationals.
Now, Toulon fans will be hoping the best is yet to come.

#1. Henry Slade – The Class Act Losing His Place
Slade's silky style has long made him a favourite with fans – but his Six Nations was anything but smooth. Once pencilled in as a midfield maestro, he now finds himself completely out of Borthwick's 23.
His combination with Ollie Lawrence never quite clicked, and although there were flickers of promise, it wasn’t enough to convince the coaches. Slade was ultimately cast aside in favour of Fraser Dingwall, and now his England future – and his central contract – looks seriously uncertain.
Possible replacement: Fraser Dingwall
The mid-Six Nations switch that saw him take Slade’s place has given Dingwall a solid opportunity to make a real push for a long-term role in the squad. A gritty and intelligent player, he's an ideal fit in the centre and could continue his rise with consistent performances.
