Gloucester Rugby have confirmed that scrum-half Stephen Varney has left the club with immediate effect to join French Top 14 side Vannes.

Varney, a product of Gloucester's academy, departs after establishing himself as a regular in the first team. His breakthrough came under head coach George Skivington during the latter's debut season at Kingsholm. The Welsh-born scrum-half featured prominently in a crop of young talent that included Louis Rees-Zammit and Jack Clement.

In 2020, Varney was called up by Italy, qualifying through his Italian mother, and made his debut against Scotland. He has since earned 30 international caps for the Azzurri and become a key player for the national side.

On Varney's departure, George Skivington said:
"It's no secret that we're in a good position in terms of half-backs. Tomos Williams has shown his quality since joining, and we have young talents like Caolan Englefield and Charlie Chapman who we're excited about.

"Steve has been a fantastic player for both Gloucester and Italy, and while I'm sad to see him go, it's understandable why he's seeking more regular game time. I'm grateful for his contributions and wish him the best in France."

Varney reflected on his time at the club, saying:
"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kingsholm. There's a great group of lads here, and they're doing exciting things. I'm incredibly grateful to Skivs and the coaching team for giving me my first shot at professional rugby.

"The Gloucester fans have been amazing throughout my time here, and I'll always appreciate their support. While I'm sad to leave, this is an exciting opportunity for me, and I'm looking forward to the next chapter in France."

Varney's move comes at a time when Gloucester are well-stocked in the scrum-half department, allowing the 30-cap Italy international to explore new challenges in the highly competitive Top 14.

This marks a significant step in Varney's career as he seeks regular game time at Vannes, and for Gloucester, it signifies the trust in their developing half-back options.
