The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has announced that Cunningham has stepped down by mutual agreement after three years in charge.
A Tough Year for Wales Women
Wales managed only four wins in 11 Tests in 2024, a year marred not only by on-field struggles but also by major off-field issues. The WRU has openly admitted to serious failings over the summer, particularly in its handling of player contract negotiations, which drew heavy criticism.
Transitioning to a New Era
Despite the setbacks, the WRU expressed its gratitude to Cunningham. The search for his successor will begin “in earnest,” according to a WRU statement. WRU chief executive Abi Tierney praised Cunningham's impact: "Ioan has been in charge for the transition of the team from amateur to professional status and led the side to a first ever win over Australia after seeing them finish third in Six Nations and reach WXV1 in 2023."
Highs and Lows of Cunningham's Tenure
Cunningham’s tenure included Wales’ best Six Nations finish in 13 years and a World Cup quarter-final appearance. However, his involvement in the contentious player contract talks and a disappointing 2024 campaign clouded his final year.
Reflecting on his time, Cunningham said he was proud of the team’s “significant progress” and achievements. But he also acknowledged the need for a fresh start, stating: "The time is now right for someone new to take the helm and I wish the new regime and everyone involved in this elite programme all the very best for the future."
