Former Ireland rugby international Brendan Mullin has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing over €567,000 while serving as managing director of Bank of Ireland Private Bank.

The 61-year-old, from Stillorgan Road, Donnybrook, Dublin, was found guilty of 12 charges following a three-week trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The offences, which included theft and dishonesty, occurred between 2011 and 2013.

Abuse of trust

The court heard that Mullin misused his position by arranging for bank funds to be paid to solicitors, accountants, and firms for personal services or those benefiting his business, Quantum Investment Strategies. He also transferred €500,000 to a company called Spice Holdings, registered in the British Virgin Islands, during a lapse in internal communication within the bank.

Sentencing him, Judge Martin Nolan said Mullin had abused a "position of trust and power," describing him as someone capable of influencing others to his advantage. The court heard that financial desperation likely motivated his actions.

Mitigating factors

Mullin repaid the stolen money, meaning the bank did not suffer financial loss. The court also considered the lengthy delay in bringing the case to trial, his acceptance of the jury’s verdict, and his expression of remorse.

However, Judge Nolan emphasised the seriousness of the offences and deemed a custodial sentence "inevitable," imposing a three-year prison term. Mullin remained silent as the verdict was delivered, bowing his head in court.

Acquittals and dismissed charges

Mullin was acquitted of two charges related to Beechwood Partners, including the alleged theft of €6,150 and a related false accounting charge. A further deception charge was dismissed during the trial.
