Six Seasons and Counting
Lewies is set to add to his impressive six-season tenure in South-West London, building on the 76 appearances he's already made in the iconic Quarters. Since his arrival in 2019/20, the South African lock has been a cornerstone of Quins' pack, both on and off the pitch.
Captain Marvel
Taking over from club legend Chris Robshaw ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, Lewies' leadership helped Harlequins secure their second Premiership title. The season was nothing short of a fairy tale, with a mid-season turnaround culminating in a dramatic 40-38 victory over Exeter Chiefs at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium.
Dominating in the Details
At 32, Lewies continues to prove his worth as one of the league's most reliable lineout operators. His defensive game is equally impressive, boasting a 96% tackle success rate through the opening rounds of this year's Gallagher Premiership.
"I'm Grateful to Quins"
Reflecting on his extension, Lewies said:
"I'm excited to extend my stay at the Club, and to continue to get the opportunity to wear the Quarters. It was a dream come true when I first signed for Harlequins and to continue that journey makes me, and my family very happy.
"Last season, it came to a stage where I was close to hanging up my boots after dealing with multiple injuries, and I didn't feel like I played to the standards I hold myself to. But I've worked hard, had a good pre-season, and I'm enjoying my rugby this year.
"I'm grateful to Quins for the opportunity to continue contributing to the Club both on and off the field."
Wilson's Verdict
Head Coach Danny Wilson couldn't hide his delight at Lewies' decision:
"Steph is a big character in our squad. He's a dominant line-out operator who leads that area in our group, and that clarity at set-piece provides the platform to play our style of rugby.
"He is also a core member of our leadership group, having captained Harlequins for several seasons. Having a pool of strong leaders, who have experienced success with the Club will only benefit the squad moving forward, and as we bring younger players into the senior set-up.
"We're all delighted Steph has committed his future to Harlequins."
