This news follows the blow of captain Sione Tuipulotu being ruled out of the tournament with a pectoral muscle injury sustained in training. Meanwhile, lock Scott Cummings remains a serious doubt after breaking his arm.
Arron Reed gets the call: Sale star drafted in
To bolster their options, Gregor Townsend has called up Sale Sharks wing Arron Reed. The 25-year-old, who was part of Scotland's Autumn Nations Series squad and bagged two tries in their victory over Portugal, has been brought in as cover for Duhan van der Merwe.
Van der Merwe, who sustained an injury while playing for Edinburgh against Vannes last weekend, missed training on Tuesday and remains a doubt for the opener against Italy. Reed, who has crossed the try line five times for Sale this season, will provide much-needed depth.
Gregor Townsend on the situation
"We've called Arron Reed into the squad, and he'll be training today [Tuesday]," said Townsend. "It's to cover Duhan this week, who has a couple of niggles.
"We were quite tight with our squad – Sione is missing, and players are training in different positions. We still thought we would be okay, but with Duhan not training today [Tuesday] and maybe not tomorrow [Wednesday], we'd fail to make our training function."
Scotland's opener looms
Townsend's side kick off their Six Nations campaign on 1 February at home against Italy. With key players sidelined, Scotland will need to adapt quickly if they are to start their campaign strongly.
