Battle at 10.
The biggest talking point coming into Ireland’s opening game of the Six Nations was the battle for the 10 jersey between Sam Prendergast and Jack Crowley, and it looks like that’s gonna continue to be the biggest talking point for quite some time.
Crowley took over from the legendary Johnny Sexton at last year’s Six Nations, helping Ireland to a second successive title.
But Prendergast then entered the scene in the Autumn after impressing with Emerging Ireland in South Africa, taking the jersey off Crowley for the Fiji game – and retaining it against Australia.
Prendergast then retained the famous 10 jersey against England yesterday, but after a mixed performance, coupled with a Crowley impressing off the bench, attention now turns to Scotland – who will be in that jersey next week.
So what’s the rivalry like between the two? O’Gara and Sexton infamously admitted to ‘hating’ each other during their battle, before becoming close friends down the line, but it seems Prendergast and Crowley are getting on a lot sooner.
"Me and Jack get along very well but there is also [Ciaran Frawley] who we get on very well with also," Prendergast said following yesterday’s win over England.
"Tens do a lot of kicking together and when there's an off day, and there's only the three of us kicking, it would be a bit awkward if we didn't get on.
"We travel in the same car to and from kicking. We give ideas to each other in training or in meetings. It's good to learn off each other.
"There are only so many reps in training, you'd love to have infinite reps. So you learn from their experiences of certain plays. That's helpful."
O’Gara and Sexton admitted to sitting silently in the car together during their battles for the 10 jersey, and while there is no doubt a rivalry between Crowley and Prendergast – the pair’s relationship is in a good place.
