Ospreys 35-15 Newcastle: Ospreys player ratings as Ospreys sink talons into Falcons with comfortable win in Challenge Cup
Today at 08:46 AM
The Ospreys scored five tries on Saturday evening as they bounced back from a record breaking defeat in Europe to keep their qualifying hopes well and truly alive. Dan Edwards put in a masterclass to guide his side to a big win over Newcastle who find themselves without a win in three games.
The Falcons got the first try of the game through their fullback Louis Brown who collected a lovely chip from Wilkinson. The Ospreys replied in similar fashion, when Giles was found free on the wing, he chipped the ball behind the on rushing defence and Jack Walsh was quickest to the ball to see the scored levelled up.
Kieran Wilkinson restored Newcastle's lead when the visitors were awarded a penalty soon after the restart but missed the chance to give his side a six-point lead moments later. The Ospreys maul got going and Sam Parry went over for a try. Kasende got the third try with a tight finish in the corner.
A yellow card to Will Spencer saw the Ospreys reduced to 14 men for the remainder of the first half after a challenge on Leatherbarrow but Newcastle were unable to take advantage of the extra man and found themselves eleven points behind at half time in South Wales.
The second half saw limited opportunities for both sides with both teams making small errors in play. Dan Kasende almost pounced on an awkward bounce but Newcastle managed to deal with the pressure as the Ospreys kept on looking for the bonus point try.
And it eventually came just after the hour mark, Dan Edwards once again proving how good he is becoming fed Jack Walsh with a rocket of a pass allowing the latter to score his second. Edwards made no mistakes from the conversion.
That try seemed to energise the Ospreys who soon scored their fifth try of the game through substitute Kieran Hardy who had a run in after Dan Kasende exploded down the wing and played the two on one smartly. Hardy thought he had a second minutes later, but was in front of Giles' kick.
Max Pepper got a late score for Newcastle but it was nothing more than a consolation try for the visitors as the Ospreys recorded a comfortable 20-point victory.
