"National Football Stadium" – Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh to be held at Hampden Park in December

A special venue has been confirmed for the upcoming United Rugby Championship match between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby, with Hampden Park set to host this battle between the Scottish rivals. The Round Eight fixture will also take place a day later than planned, with the alternated date now confirmed for Sunday December 22nd.

Hampden Park is the home of the Scotland national football team, and at full capacity can host 51,866 fans. This bold move by Glasgow Warriors is in order to broaden the access to rugby across the city, and the west of Scotland.

This is a significant increase from the capacity of Glasgow’s regular home of Scotstoun Stadium, that holds space for approximately 7,000 fans.

Hampden Park will become the 55th venue to host a URC (Pro12 or Pro14) league fixture, and now means that both of the 1872 Cup derby games between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh will be hosted in national stadiums. The return leg plays a week later at Murrayfield.

Hampden Park has also held four full international rugby union matches since the stadium's opening, the first of which saw Scotland beat South Africa 6-0 in 1906 in front of 30,000 spectators. The stadium has since been used as a venue for the 1999 Rugby World Cup, and most recently saw Scotland take on Australia in an autumn Test in November 2004.
