The 33-year-old announced his departure from Kubota Spears on Monday, revealing he and his partner are relocating closer to home as they prepare for the arrival of their first child.

Williams previously dazzled at Sarries from 2017 to 2019, where he claimed a Premiership title and a European Champions Cup, cementing his place as a fan favourite. Now, the “Sanjay” era resumes at Allianz Park!

“The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for me in all honesty,” Williams said. , external

“One of the Sarries management contacted my agent to see if I would be interested in finishing the season with them due to injuries within the squad, and it didn’t take long to say ‘yes’.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my previous time with the club. It was a special time in both my career as well as the club, winning multiple trophies, and the unique culture of the club left a mark with me.

“I can’t wait to join the squad, following the birth of my first child, and help them achieve their goals.”

Kubota Spears confirmed the news on Instagram, citing Williams' family commitments as the reason for his departure. The club shared heartfelt statements from both their general manager and the player himself, praising Williams' contributions during his time in Japan.

With the birth of his child on the horizon, it seems Williams is setting his sights on a fresh chapter back in familiar surroundings.

In his statement, Williams wrote the following: “To all the Kubota Spears and Orange Army. As I prepare to leave Japan and return to my family back home, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to everyone.

“Deciding to leave Japan was by no means easy, but my wife and I are thrilled to be welcoming our first child soon, and as we approach this special time, we feel it was important to me to return to our family.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the coaches and team management, including head coach Fran for showing great understanding of my family situation and allowing me to return to the UK.

“Being part of this club is one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.

“From the tough training sessions, to the friendships shared on and off the field, we’ve learned so much not just about rugby, but also about teamwork, recovery, and friendship.

“Your support, passion and support for the game is truly inspiring and I am very fortunate to have been welcomed into such a special group. I will always cherish the bond we have built and the memories we have created together.

“I will miss this wonderful team dearly. I’m always supporting you all from afar. Looking forward to staying in touch and chasing your success.”
