Will Willis Make the 2027 World Cup? While Willis' new contract keeps him away from international duty for now, there's still a glimmer of hope he might feature at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The 28-year-old confirmed on Monday that he's signed a four-year extension with Toulouse, though a break clause could allow him to join a Gallagher Premiership club for the 2027-28 season—making him eligible for England again.
The RFU's Controversial Rule The Rugby Football Union's rigid selection policy mandates that players must represent one of the Premiership's ten clubs to don the England jersey. Despite exploratory talks between Willis' camp and the RFU about a potential Premiership return, no guarantees of Test selection were offered—even with Willis' red-hot form over the past year.
Wasps to Toulouse: Willis' Journey Willis, who joined Toulouse after Wasps' collapse in 2022, was initially granted special dispensation to represent England in 2023. However, his last Test appearance was during the Rugby World Cup that year, bringing his total caps to 14.
Toulouse Triumphs and Lions Tour Prospects Since relocating to France, Willis has been pivotal in Toulouse's dominance, helping them secure two TOP14 titles and a Champions Cup. His stellar performances make him a strong candidate for the British & Irish Lions' tour to Australia this summer. Unlike England's selection policy, the Lions' setup allows for players based overseas, although potential TOP14 playoff commitments could complicate Willis' availability.
'An Honour to Re-Sign' Willis expressed his joy over extending his Toulouse stay: "It is a massive honour to have re-signed at Toulouse. I have made so many incredible memories on and off the field with this team in 2024, and I can't wait for many more!
"I feel so grateful for the welcome I have had here since day one from the supporters, staff, and most of all the players, and that made the decision to sign on for longer even easier. I look forward to making more memories with this group and seeing what we can achieve in the years to come."
What's Next for England? With Willis off the radar for now, Borthwick faces an uphill battle to assemble his ideal squad ahead of the next World Cup cycle. England's loss, however, is undeniably Toulouse's gain.
