Italy scrape past Georgia with a 20-17 victory at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to get their biggest ever test comeback, coming back from a 6-17 deficit.
It was a dominant performance from the Italians throughout, with them having the majority of possession and territory for most of the 80 minutes, and despite a first half littered with mistakes that Georgia capitalised on, their dominance paid off in the end and the scoreline flattered their opposition by the time the full-time whistle blew.
Italy Player Ratings: Italy 20 – 17 Georgia (Autumn Nations Series)
15. Matt Gallagher – 6
A couple of missed kicks from Gallagher who otherwise looked okay with the ball in his hands. Apart from that had a good performance but was outshone by his opposite number 15, one of the better players for Italy but two missed kicks drops his rating.
14. Jacopo Trulla – 6.5
Some good play on the wing but did not show the quality that he has done previously. Came back on following a HIA assessment so showed battlng qualities and was actually better after returning to the pitch.
13. Juan Ignacio Brex – 6.5
Some loose passes and kicks but it was a mostly good performance from Brex. He was heavily involved in a lot of the play and always looked to make things happen, had the intent but lacked a touch of quality today.
12. Tommaso Menoncello – 5.5
Had limited involvement to write about against a stout defence, before being taken off after around 60 minutes, Italy looked a much more dangerous outfit after the subs at this time, so make of that what you will.
11. Monty Ioane – 5.5
Didn't have his best game, couldn't capitalise on a few good opportunities but was very lucky his side got over the line otherwise could have been in the firing line for criticism. Was the victim of some good defending so not necessarily entirely his fault.
10. Paolo Garbisi – 7.5
His kicking got Italy over the line, was a shining light for Italy even when they were at their weakest, if they had 15 of Paolo on the pitch today then the scoreline would have looked a lot more handsome.
9. Alessandro Garbisi – 7
Was the main man for Italy and made a few good runs and offloads, scored a few points from the tee and always looked dangerous, however the general substance lacked. Had a tough job with his team mates not helping him out.
8. Ross Vintcent – 8
An outstanding performance from Vintcent, arguably the best player on the pitch. Both on and off the ball created chances and snuffed out Georgian attacks when needed. Only right that the 8 recieves an 8.
7. Michele Lamaro (captain) – N/A
Came off after two minutes following a shoulder injury, very disappointing for the Italian captain.
6. Sebastian Negri – 6.5
Some powerful running and powerful work when defending, was a key man for Italy. His passing wasn't the best and lacked a bit of x-factor but all in all can be pretty happy with his game.
5. Dino Lamb – 7.5
Lamb was probably the best player for Italy in a lacklustre first half for his side. Tailed off slightly in the second half but was still solid from the lineout throughout. A good 80 minute shift from him.
4. Niccolo Cannone – 6
Some decent tackles but after coming off Italy looked a lot better (alebit it was around the time Georgia got a yellow but even when it was 15 v 15 they looked better) . Georgia edged it physically but that is no slight on Cannone who competed against one of the best forward packs in world rugby.
3. Simone Ferrari – 6
Similarly to Cannone, just about lost the physical battle but it was always going to be a tough ask. Did enough to keep Italy in the game and had some joy at the scrum.
2. Giacomo Nicotera – 6
Wasn't perfect from lineouts but was ok. Helped Italy do well from scrums but in general was second best in terms of coming against his opposite man before coming off at around 60 minutes to freshen up his side.
1. Danilo Fischetti – 6
Some joy at the scrum for Italy, powerful running on the ball that gave his side some much needed yards at times, when him and Ferrari came off Italy went up a gear, but that is not necessarily a fair reflection on their performances
Replacements:
16. Gianmarco Lucchesi – 6
Good but not perfect from lineouts, didn't have too much impact on the game after coming on with 20 to go but his side looked better late on.
17. Mirco Spagnolo – 6
Was a much-needed fresh body on the front row, helped his side get over the line
18. Pietro Ceccarelli – 6
The exact same as Spagnolo.
19. Riccardo Favretto – 6.5
Wasn't too impactful but was good for his side, slightly better than the others who came on at the same time.
20. Manuel Zuliani – 5.5
Came on early for his captain and just failed to emulate the quality that his captain would have provided. Was a reason that Italy looked relatively poor as he just isn't as good as who he came on for.
21. Alessandro Fusco – 7.5
Scored the winning try and flipped the game on its head after coming on, powerfully went over the line through a sea of Georgian bodies and looked the real deal, despite limited minutes.
22. Leonardo Marin – N/A
Limited cameo while Trulla had an HIA.
23. Giulio Bertaccini- N/A
Didn't come on.
