The Irish Rugby Football Union [IRFU] has not disclosed the specific reason for Tadhg Furlong’s absence, but it’s believed the 31-year-old Leinster tighthead prop sustained an injury during training.
In his place, Connacht’s Finlay Bealham steps into the Irish front row, with Ulster’s Tom O’Toole moving up to the bench.
Though Furlong is sidelined, Ronan Kelleher has managed to pass a fitness test and will fill in for the injured Dan Sheehan at hooker.
Leading Ireland for the autumn series is Caelan Doris, appointed captain. Peter O’Mahony, who took over the captaincy for Ireland’s Six Nations title win earlier this year following Johnny Sexton’s retirement, will start on the bench.
New Zealand, who knocked Ireland out in last year’s World Cup quarter-final, will announce their team at 16:00 GMT on Wednesday.
After Friday’s much-anticipated clash with the All Blacks, Ireland will face Argentina, Fiji, and Australia in their autumn campaign.
“It’s a hugely exciting four weeks ahead in Aviva Stadium and we know we’ll need to perform at a high level to beat a top-class New Zealand side,” said Farrell, who will take a temporary break from his Ireland role after the autumn series to prepare for leading the British and Irish Lions next year.
“The challenge doesn’t come much bigger or better than New Zealand at a packed Aviva Stadium on a Friday night, under lights, with a home crowd roaring us on.”
