Harlequins 42-17 Leicester: 5 Talking Points from Allianz Stadium PWR clash as Quins hammer Tigers
12/29/2024 12:43 PM
Harlequins Women cruised to a comfortable 42-17 win over Leicester Tigers Women at the Allianz Stadium in the first of a double header at Harlequins Big Game 16 celebrations.
Tries from Connie and Kayliegh Powell, Lisa Neumann, Carys Phillips and doubles from Claudia Pena and Ellie Kildunne were enough to see off the visitors.
Quins break records again
Trailblazers once again as Harlequins Women set a record for a women's club rugby match of 18,055 fans watching, beating their previous record of 16,238 from Big Game 15. Harlequins asked supporters to be in their seat for the second half and then used high resolution 360 degree imaging to count the number of supporters in their seats.
Clàudia Peña flying the flag high for Spain
There are only four Spanish internationals playing in the PWR but Peña is definitely a trailblazer for more to follow. Scoring two tries and putting in an attacking masterclass at the home of English rugby is a performance no one can shy away from. The centre slid in for her first from close range and chased down a Lucy Packer kick through for her second in a scintillating display. She has all the makings of becoming a proper hero of Spanish rugby and I really hope she does.
Ellie Kildunne proving why she is the best in the world
Fresh off winning the Women’s Player of the Year Award back in November Kildunne was back gracing the Allianz turf in her typical fashion. The fullback put in a defensive masterclass and finished off a wonderful sweeping move of which she started in her own 22. Stepping round multiple defenders for her second shortly after, Kildunne was a constant threat with and without the ball. It's like she is playing a game on easy mode, seeing a different game to those around her not just at times, but the whole game.
Meg Jones shows her international class
A shining light in what was a poor Leicester Tigers Women's display. Jones got the first try for the visitors after spotting a gap and going over from closer range but it was the physicality that set her apart. The centre was the defensive leader in her system and although she copped a yellow card for her troubles she was still the best Tigers player on the pitch.
Harlequins Physicality
The home side battered and bruised the visitors all afternoon with the likes of Alex Callender and Silvia Turani just a couple who put in some powerful performances in the forwards. Quin's scored eight tries and it would've been a whole lot harder if the forwards weren't as dominant as they were.
