The 34-year-old recently wrapped up his second spell with Gloucester, having first played for the club before a three-season stint with Leicester Tigers between 2017 and 2020.

May has now signed a two-year deal with Soyaux-Angouleme, a team competing in France’s ProD2, the second tier of French rugby.

"I don't think I've ever been more excited about signing a contract than this time," May said in a club statement. "I'm 110 per cent committed to giving my best rugby to this team."

Building Connections in Angouleme

May expressed his desire to immerse himself in the local culture, stating, "More than that, I really want to buy into the culture of the town and the club, make friends and memories, and make Angouleme a special place for me and my family."

International Retirement and Future Aspirations

Following England's impressive third-place finish in the Rugby World Cup, May announced his retirement from international duty.

However, he remains focused on his rugby career, exploring various post-playing opportunities, including the possibility of joining the fire service with the RAF.

"I am still hoping to play for the next couple of years or a year; I'm not quite ready to stop playing yet, but the RAF could help me come in during the off-season," he said. "It would help me get a bit of a foot up while I am still playing."
