Teammates saved his life

Cakau, 46, collapsed in the clubhouse, prompting a heroic response from his teammates and club president Tauraa Exham, who performed CPR for 15 minutes before emergency services arrived. He was resuscitated and stabilised before being rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical care.

Signs of improvement

Despite the severity of the situation, reports suggest Cakau has shown signs of improvement in recent days. The rugby community has rallied around him, with messages of support pouring in.

A GoFundMe page set up to support his family has already raised £15,000. Exham, who organised the fundraiser, made it clear that Cakau still has unfinished business.

"He better recover quickly! We've been working with some of the most remote communities in Australia to bring their kids coaching clinics, and he still has work to do!" Exham said.

How you can help

The fundraiser aims to ease the financial burden on Cakau's wife and children while he fights to recover.

"Sete has given so much to rugby and his community – now it's our turn to give back," Exham wrote. "Donations will ensure Sete's wife and children can focus on supporting him through his recovery, without worrying about financial burdens."

Fiji rugby icon

Cakau was a key player for Fiji Sevens between 2003 and 2008, featuring in multiple IRB Sevens World Series campaigns. He was also part of Fiji's coaching staff at the 2023 Paris Olympics, continuing his legacy in the game.

Now, the rugby world is uniting to help one of its own.
