Northampton Saints fans have reason to celebrate as homegrown talent Emmanuel Iyogun has signed a new deal to remain at Franklin's Gardens. The 24-year-old loosehead prop, who has been with the club since his academy days, has become an integral part of the team and a fan favorite.
Rising Through the Ranks
Iyogun's journey with the Saints began in their Academy system, where his potential shone through early. After signing a full-time contract ahead of the 2019/20 season, he debuted in the Gallagher Premiership against Leicester Tigers, becoming Saint #2029. Since then, Iyogun has amassed 65 appearances in the famous Black, Green, and Gold jersey, scoring two tries.
His rapid rise is even more remarkable given his transition from the back row to the front row during his development. This switch demonstrated both his versatility and resilience, earning him the club's Breakthrough Player of the Season award in 2019/20.
Commitment to the Club
"It means so much to me to be staying on with my hometown Club," Iyogun shared. "Northampton Saints isn't just a team to me; it's my family, my community, and a place where I've grown both as a player and a person.
"This Club has been a constant source of support through some of the most challenging times in my life, whether that has been on or off the field. The unwavering belief and encouragement from everyone at Saints has been exceptional – from coaches, staff members, the players around me and our incredible supporters. This Club is nothing short of remarkable."
Iyogun also expressed his excitement for the future, saying, "What excites me the most about the next chapter is being a part of the group we have here, alongside some of the most talented young players and innovative coaches in the game. Together, I believe we've got something extraordinary in the making; the potential of this team is limitless, and I can't wait to see what heights we can reach."
Determination to rise the ranks
Iyogun's early exposure to high-stakes rugby came in his first season in the Senior Academy when injuries thrust him into the spotlight. At just 19, he started for Saints in a Heineken Champions Cup quarter-final against Exeter Chiefs—a baptism of fire he navigated with composure and skill.
Since then, he has featured prominently for the team, including in last season's Gallagher Premiership Final and Investec Champions Cup semi-final. His standout performances earned him a spot in England's touring squad to New Zealand last summer, further solidifying his reputation as one of the country's brightest young talents.
High Praise from Saints Leadership
Saints' Director of Rugby, Phil Dowson, lauded Iyogun's development and commitment. "We're thrilled to keep Manny at the Club. It feels like he has been around the place for ages, but at 24 he's still so young – especially for a prop – and still has so much he can achieve.
"We talk all the time about our pathway system, and usually it takes longer for players in the tight five to learn the tough lessons they need to, and then make the jump into the first team. But he took to top-level rugby like a duck to water from his debut in 2020."
Dowson added, "Manny's athleticism means he is strong and powerful for his set-piece work, but his skill level and desire to carry the ball is another point of difference for him. He's always looking to get better, and striving for consistency from week to week."
The Road Ahead
Despite an injury that has sidelined him in recent matches, Iyogun remains focused on the future. His 12 appearances this season and inclusion in the England A side that faced Australia A in November are proof of his readiness to contribute at the highest level.
As Iyogun recommits to the Saints, fans can look forward to watching one of their own continue to grow and excel, both for the club and potentially on the international stage.
