England attack coach Richard Wigglesworth has provided an injury update, ahead of Saturday’s Six Nations clash with Scotland. There is a late change for England, with Bath’s Ted Hill coming up onto the bench for Leicester Tigers forward George Martin, with the lock not cleared for the Calcutta Cup match due to a knee injury.

"Unfortunately, George Martin had a bit of a setback this morning, so he’s been withdrawn from the 23, and Ted Hill comes onto the bench in his place." Wigglesworth said, at the England media session this afternoon. “He had a couple of bangs post the fans game that he and we thought were going to be all right, but to go and play a Test match, you have to be close to 100%, so he’s not quite right this morning.”

“So, we made that decision pre-training, so Ted Hill trained fully in that position."

Martin has a history of knee issues, however the former Leicester Tigers coach has assured that the England lock is not suffering from a re-aggravated old injury. Martin is feeling the affects of a bruising battle in the aptly named ‘Le Crunch’, and has been unable to bounce back to full fitness since the Six Nations second round win over France.

"No, it isn’t (an old injury). Just because the nature of these ones are bangs, rather than it being anything structural. No, not concerned. Wigglesworth added. "George is incredibly diligent, getting to know his body more and more.

"I mean, you guys watch him, you know what he puts himself through, so naturally after the Test match, as we’ve seen with a few other countries this weekend, you guys picked up a bang.

"The way he plays, we want him to be able to rip in as he does, and if we’ve got any risk of that, then we’ve got Ted and we’re pleased to put him in."

Ted Hill is set for his first England involvement since the Summer of 2021, as the Bath man has not played for his country in the Steve Borthwick era. Hill last featured for England in a Summer fixture against the United States, and is eyeing up only his third ever cap whilst wearing the famous red rose. Wigglesworth was full of praise for the former Worcester Warriors man, who has patiently bode his time for the Test involvement.

"Yeah, he’s been great. We’ve had him in and around the squad for a while now. He’s played really well for Bath, so we know his talents with the ball. He’s worked incredibly diligently. I’m sure he’s excited to get his chance, and we’re excited to watch him go when he comes on. He’s another guy to add a bit of pace as well.

"We’ve all been talking about pace, tempo. He’s seriously quick. He is, yeah. He’s an incredible athlete, Ted. So, not only quick across the ground, but quick in the air, line-out time. No, he’ll add. He’s got a different set of super-strengths to George Martin, but we’ll expect him to bring the best of him when he comes on. I don’t want him to play like anyone else. I want the best of Ted.
