There has been another twist in the saga regarding Immanuel Feyi-Waboso’s England hopes. The wing has now decided to undergo a shoulder operation, after initially foregoing the surgery in favour of a late push to play in the 2025 Guinness Men’s Six Nations.

Feyi-Waboso arrived at the England camp this past Thursday, where he spent a day in Surrey undergoing an assortment of medical tests. The results determined that the Exeter wing was not at a suitable level to complete a surgery-free road to recovery, and the 22-year-old will now go under the knife to fix his injured shoulder.

England senior assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth is understandably gutted for Feyi-Waboso, and expressed how he would have been delighted for the wing to get the green light, and rejoin the training squad at Pennyhill Park. Unfortunatly, Feyi-Waboso’s injury worsened upon the testing process, with the Chiefs man making the tough decision to undergo the operation and sit out on the 2025 Six Nations.

“We needed to make sure he was going to be right, so he got tested properly here, significantly tested.” Wigglesworth said, in this afternoon’s England media session. “It (Feyi-Waboso’s shoulder) wasn’t right so then the surgery option then came. I haven’t been involved in the process or the decision for surgery and not surgery. I know that’s what happened when he came in, that we re-tested, and it was injured on re-testing.

“As an attack coach, I would be lying (if I didn’t think). It would be nice if Manny was… (available) but it wasn’t like ‘that’ close that you were planning to have him in. There were all these hurdles that he was going to have to get over and failed at one, a fair bit away from returning to play.

It’s a devastating set-back for the exhilarating young wing, with a press release from Exeter Chiefs confirming the flyer’s extended stint on the sidelines.

“Exeter Chiefs and England winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso will spend a couple of months on the sidelines having elected to have surgery on a shoulder injury.” The statement from the Devon club read. “The breakout international player – who is on one of England Rugby's enhanced EPS contracts – suffered a shoulder dislocation in Chiefs' Gallagher Premiership match against Sale Sharks in December 2024.

“Having consulted the medical teams at England and Exeter Chiefs, Feyi-Waboso originally attempted to rehabilitate the injury. However, he suffered a reinjury of the issue in England camp recently and has now elected to undergo surgery. Feyi-Waboso will now enter a recovery period, expected to be a minimum of 12-14 weeks. Everyone at Exeter Chiefs wishes him the very best in his recovery.”
