Wales great Dan Biggar has officially brought the curtain down on a glittering 18-year rugby career – and his wife Alex Biggar delivered the emotional knockout punch with a heartfelt tribute on social media.

Competition: Get a Chance to Watch the Lions in Australia

The 35-year-old fly-half, who starred for the British & Irish Lions, Wales, Ospreys, and Northampton Saints, will finish his career in France with Toulon, having joined the Top 14 giants in November 2022.

“We love you and can't wait to see what's next”
Posting to Instagram following Biggar’s retirement announcement, Alex, who works as a baker, didn't hold back on the emotion:

"Dan, words can't describe how proud we are of everything you've achieved. From the little boy with big dreams to the man who has given everything to the game he loves."

"The highs, the lows, the sacrifices – only a few truly understand what it takes, and you've done it all with such determination, passion and heart."

"But more than the player, it's the husband and father you are that means the most. It's time for new adventures, more family time, and embracing everything this next chapter has in store."

The pair, who first met at school and tied the knot in 2016, have two sons together – James and Oliver.

“For the first time in 19 years, I can just say yes”
Speaking on The Phone In on BBC Radio Wales, Biggar opened up on how it feels to finally take the pressure off after nearly two decades in the game.

“For the last 18 or 19 years, I've been told where to be, what to wear, what time to get on a bus, what time to get on a plane,” he said.

“We've never been able to just book something in advance. My wife asked me the other day, 'Can we take the kids to Disneyland around Halloween?' Without even thinking, I said, 'Yeah, let's book it now, let's do it'. That's kind of the first time in 19 years I've been able to do that.”

What's next for Biggar?
While he's waved goodbye to the pitch, Biggar isn't disappearing completely. The fly-half hinted that a part-time consultancy role could be on the cards, but for now, he's focusing on media work – and, most importantly, enjoying life with his family.

From a schoolboy dreamer to one of the most respected No.10s in world rugby, Dan Biggar's legacy is secure. And for once, the next chapter isn't written in a playbook – it's whatever he and his family want it to be.

Dan Biggar names bold Lions XV – with big England omissions

Wales legend Dan Biggar has officially called time on his playing career, but not before dropping a blockbuster British & Irish Lions XV on The Rugby Pod – and his picks are bound to raise a few eyebrows.

The 112-cap fly-half, who steered Wales through some of their finest Six Nations and World Cup moments, appeared on Jim Hamilton's podcast this week and revealed his Lions dream team. Spoiler alert: there’s no room for the likes of Owen Farrell, Johnny Sexton, or even himself.

Here's how Biggar's team shaped up…

Front-row firepower: Porter, Sheehan & Furlong

1. Andrew Porter
2. Dan Sheehan
3. Tadhg Furlong

It's an all-Irish affair in the front row, with Biggar backing Leinster’s dominant trio to boss the scrum. Furlong remains the Rolls-Royce of tightheads, while Sheehan and Porter provide dynamism in the loose.

Big boys in the boiler room: Itoje & Beirne

4. Maro Itoje
5. Tadhg Beirne

England's Maro Itoje gets the nod despite some inconsistent recent form, with Biggar clearly still valuing his disruptive brilliance. He's paired with the ever-reliable Beirne – a turnover machine and Lions Test starter in 2021.

Breakdown beasts: Curry, Van Der Flier & Doris (c)

6. Tom Curry
7. Josh van der Flier
8. Caelan Doris (captain)

This back row is pure chaos – in the best possible way. England's Tom Curry returns to the fray, Ireland's Van der Flier adds World Player of the Year pedigree, and Doris, who's fast becoming a modern-day great, takes the armband. A fearless choice.
