When Celebrations Go Overboard
The 26-year-old did admit, however, that there was a time when his exuberance crossed the line.
Appearing on Danny Care's Hits Different podcast, Earl reflected on a particular incident that sparked online mockery. It happened during a warm-up match against Ireland ahead of the 2023 World Cup.
“The Knee Slide Was Too Much”
Earl's infamous celebration came after an Irish throw was ruled not-straight. Dropping to one knee and unleashing a dramatic fist-pump, he became an instant meme. But the 37-cap international insists it wasn't intentional.
"I've got one of the great fist-pumps of our time," Earl joked. "The knee slide was too much. Let's put some context on this… It was an Ireland warm-up game, and we're getting absolutely hosed. We're five metres from our line, totally up against it, and they throw a not-straight, which was quite dubious.
“I've gone for a split-stance fist-pump, and my knee completely caved in. Hence, I went down. I tried to play it off by bringing the other knee down, but the damage was done."
