NEWS: Sanele Nohamba has been granted an early release from his contract with the Lions to pursue his career in Japan.
The badly kept secret has finally been confirmed as the flyhalf's split with the Lions has been rumoured for a few months.
Nohamba signed with the Blue Revs in Japan in mid-December and was initially earmarked to join them on July 1, 2025, but the Lions agreed to an early release.
He joined the Johannesburg side from the Sharks in 2022.
The 26-year-old was named URC Player of the Season during the 2023/24 campaign despite the Lions failing to reach the quarterfinals.
He also walked away with the coveted Player of the Year award at the Lions for his outstanding performances throughout the 2023/24 season.
Nohamba was well and truly in the driver's seat for the Lions, not only directing traffic from flyhalf but also piling up the points as the goal-kicker.
However, in recent months he had fallen out of favour with the team, making his move more justifiable.
He grew up in Alice in a rugby community where he used to sneak away to go and watch club rugby on Sundays.
He attended Durban High School where his career took off and made the Grant Khomo team and the SA Under-16 High Performance squad before his senior career kicked off.
